Lyrics

Had It Not Been for the Old Rugged Cross

1st verse
They were lined up and down the streets of that city just to see this Jesus pass by
He was beaten and battered, His clothes were in tatters
You could hear the crowd shout “Crucify”
The anguish and pain he endured on that day gave way to the weight of the cross
On Calvary’s hill, where his blood was spilled; such love for a world that was lost

Chorus
There at the cross mercy was given, came in rushed in like a flood
There at the cross my sins were forgiven, covered by His precious blood
A sacrifice offered for all my transgressions; His life for my ransom the cost
A debt I would pay with no hope from the grave had it not been for the old rugged cross

2nd verse
I remember the church and the pew I was sitting when they asked “would I like to be saved?”
After hearing the message of this man they called Jesus; my hand I so quickly did raise
As I made my way forward the song they were singing
Was a hymn called, “The Old Rugged Cross”
Thank God for that day when I forever was changed for this sinner was no longer lost
